LOONA (also known as Girl Of The Month) (stylized as LOOΠΔ/) is a twelve-member girl group under BlockBerry Creative.
Their English name was derived from rearranging the first consonants of the Hangul alphabet. Specifically, the sequence “ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ” is transformed into “ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ,” resulting in the unique name LOOΠΔ. This can also be spotted in the intros of LOONA’s music videos.
The group's large-scale debut promotions primarily caught attention as each member was introduced to the public one by one from October 2016 until June 2018. With each introduction came a solo digital single and music video, with some sub-units being revealed along the way.
By August 19th, 2018, LOONA held a full-group debut concert called "LOONAbirth," followed by the release of their highly-anticipated debut mini-album, [+ +], the next day.
In March 2022, LOONA participated in the second season of the Mnet reality show "Queendom." After some members tested positive for COVID-19, the group could not join the filming for the show's first round of competition. However, the group still ranked 2nd place in the show's finale, much to the joy of fans—also known as Orbits.
In August 2022, LOONA embarked on their first-ever world tour called 'LOONATHEWORLD," where they met fans and held concerts in different states and countries. However, the world tour was marred by concerns and controversies after fans noticed some members were getting sick due to the tour's tight schedule.
On November 25th, 2022, BlockBerry Creative shocked fans when they announced the expulsion of member Chuu from the group, leading to a legal battle between the agency and the idol. A few days later, it was revealed that all members, except HyunJin and ViVi, filed lawsuits to suspend their exclusive contracts, citing broken mutual trust as the reason.
On January 13th, 2023, HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry won their lawsuits against BlockBerry Creative. However, HaSeul, YeoJin, Yves, Go Won and HyeJu lost theirs due to past provisions.
In February 2023, HyunJin and ViVi followed the rest of the members in filing lawsuits to suspend their exclusive contracts with the agency, with fans speculating that HyunJin waited for ViVi to sort out her working visa.
On May 9th, 2023, HyunJin and ViVi won their lawsuits against the agency.
Finally, after the lengthy legal battle between the members and the agency, on June 16th, 2023, it was revealed that all members had successfully won their cases, effectively leaving BlockBerry Creative.
On July 17, member JinSoul revealed through an interview that the group hasn't disbanded yet and they are willing to reunite as 12 members.
