BLACKPINK Is The First K-Pop Girl Group To Chart A No. 1 Album In The U.S. "Billboard 200" Chart
On the 26th, BLACKPINK said through its agency YG Entertainment, "It is a moment of honor created by BLINK (fandom name). Thank you so much and we love you. We're happy that the album, which contains the efforts of many staff members who put their heads together with us, seems to have reached many people properly," they said.
The members then said, "While working on BORN PINK, we wanted to play BLACKPINK's music that has evolved as well as team identity," and added, "We will do my best to show you good things in the future." According to a preview article released by Billboard on the 25th (local time), BLACKPINK's second full-length album "BORN PINK" will enter first on the Billboard 200 chart as of October 1. This is the first record for a K-pop female artist and the first time in 14 years and five months since Danity Kane in 2008 among girl groups around the world.
BLACKPINK also settled for first place on the UK's official album chart on the 24th, surpassing the best K-pop girl group record (2nd place). BLACKPINK is the only Asian female artist to dominate the world's two major charts at the same time, and it is the first case of conquering a girl group in 21 years since Destiny's Child in 2001.
Leading foreign media also rushed to report BLACKPINK's achievements. In particular, Forbes, a U.S. economic magazine, said, "BLACKPINK's No. 1 Billboard 200 has a special meaning. "They have written a new history," the magazine said. This shows that BLACKPINK has left a clear mark in music history around the world beyond K-pop.
BLACKPINK's overwhelming influence is more clearly revealed on YouTube. They entered the "Top 5 YouTube Subscribers" for the first time as non-English-speaking artists in July 2020 quickly overtook leading artists and finally rose to the top among artists around the world on September 10, 2021. Currently, it has 81.8 million subscribers.
BLACKPINK's second full-length album "BORN PINK" recorded more than 2 million pre-orders during the pre-sale period and sold 2,141,281 copies (including North American and European exports) after a day and a half, becoming the first K-pop girl group to become a "double million seller." It topped the iTunes album chart in 60 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, and topped the Apple Music album chart in 64 countries.
