Korean Red Cross Calls Out Cube Entertainment Over (G)I-DLE's Recent Outfit

On July 22nd, Korean media outlets reported that the Korean Red Cross had contacted Cube Entertainment regarding (G)I-DLE's recent stage outfit.

Last July 19th, the girl group performed their newest song 'Klaxon' on KBS2 'Music Bank' while wearing lifeguard outfits with the Red Cross emblem. Later on, a heated debate ensued on online community boards after some netizens pointed out the short and tight style of the outfits, alleging that they are sexualizing the related occupations. Meanwhile, others also criticized the seemingly unauthorized use of emblem.

According to Article 25 of the Korean National Red Cross Organization Act, anyone who is not the Red Cross, military medical institution, or a person who has received approval for use from the Red Cross must not use the Red Cross emblem for business or propaganda purposes. Violators are subject to a fine of up to 10 million won or a penalty surcharge of up to 5 million won.

An official from the Korean Red Cross stated in a phone call with Dispatch on the 22nd, "According to the Red Cross Humanitarian Law Research Institute, there has never been a request for approval for the use of the emblem from the agency or production company."

However, it is believed that the mistake was due to ignorance and not intentional. The official said, "It seems that the agency did not know that they could not use the emblem."

The official went on to clarify, "If there is intentional or habitual unauthorized use of the mark, the Ministry of Justice or the Ministry of Welfare may impose fines or penalties," adding, "We plan to contact the agency and ask for a response regarding prevention of recurrence."

On the same day, Cube Entertainment also released an official statement regarding the reports. The agency said, "We are checking the situation with the relevant internal department."
