K-pop Agencies To Take Action Against Deepfakes

Amid the rampant crime of deepfake (AI-based synthetic) sexual exploitation, K-pop agencies have also responded.

YG Entertainment, which includes idol group BLACKPINK and BabyMonster, officially said on the 2nd, "We are very seriously aware of the situation in which inappropriate deepfake productions are being produced and distributed in relation to their artists."

YG added, "We continue to monitor the illegal activities that are widespread and malicious, and we are working to delete/block illegal videos, and we are taking all possible legal measures, including criminal proceedings."

Deepfake crime means illegally combining the faces of acquaintances into videos or photos. Recently, while deepfake sex crimes have emerged as a social problem, the damage to female celebrities whose faces are exposed to the media has also been shown to be great.

In response, each agency responded. JYP Entertainment, an agency of girl groups TWICE and NMIXX, said, "We are taking the situation of the recent spread of deepfake videos targeting our artists very seriously. This is a clear illegal act, and we are collecting all related data and are in the process of taking strong legal action without leniency with a professional law firm."

Singer Kwon Eunbi has also filed a complaint. "We have filed the first complaint against those who synthesized the artist's portrait and distributed fake pornographic photos, and the police are investigating the case," Woollim Entertainment, the agency, said. "This is a clear criminal act," adding that it will continue to take criminal measures without leniency.

Other agencies eventually pulled their swords against the spread of deepfake videos and began to protect artists.
