Jonghyun (종현) was a South Korean singer-songwriter and composer under SM Entertainment. He was a member of the boy group SHINee and the project ballad group S.M. THE BALLAD.
In 2005, Jonghyun was scouted by SM Entertainment after he performed in a song festival with his high school band, called ZION. He later dropped out of high school in the tenth grade, transferring to Seoul Music Institute.
Jonghyun debuted as part of the five-member boy group SHINee on May 25, 2008, on SBS' Inkigayo.
In November 2010, Jonghyun, along with TRAXX's Jay, Super Junior's Kyuhyun, and Jino (now a member of Pentagon and goes by the name Jinho) participated in SM the Ballad, a project group formed by SM Entertainment with a focus on ballads and R&B. The group released their debut EP album, Miss You, on November 29, 2010.
He made his solo debut on January 12, 2015 with his first mini-album Base.
On December 18, 2017, Jonghyun passed away due to suicide. His final album, Poet | Artist, was released posthumously on January 23, 2018.
