Jeong Hyeon Cheol (정현철), popularly known as Seo Taiji, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. He rose to become an influential music icon and one of the most successful artists of the country, even earning the nickname "Culture president".
Seo Taiji's passion for music began at a very young age. He joined different amateur rock bands until he was recruited to join the heavy metal band Sinawe. Seo Taiji eventually decided to drop out of high school to pursue music full time, and from this, he slowly worked on his musicality and career growth.
In 1992, Seo Taiji formed the group Seo Taiji and the boys, along with Yang Hyun Suk and Lee Juno—together, they found immediate success. They released different music and presented styles that resonated with the younger generation, eventually becoming the catalyst of Korean pop's development. In 1996, after Seo Taiji and The Boys' disbandment, Seo Taiji retired and flew to America.
In 2000, Seo Taiji returned to South Korea and pursued a solo career in music.
