NCT is a 25-member boy group managed by SM Entertainment. The group operates through multiple sub-units, each based in major cities worldwide, reflecting the group's name, which stands for "Neo Culture Technology."
Before their official debut, many members were part of SMROOKIES, SM Entertainment's pre-debut team. Initially introduced under the name SR14B (SMROOKIES 2014 Boys), the team began unveiling members in December 2013, starting with Taeyong and Jeno, followed by Jaehyun, Mark, Jisung, Johnny, Ten, and Yuta. In 2014, Haechan and Jaemin were added, and videos showcasing their talents, including rapping and dance performances, were released on SM's platforms. Additional members, such as Doyoung, Taeil, and Winwin, were revealed between 2015 and early 2016.
The group was officially announced on January 27, 2016, during the “SMTown: New Culture Technology 2016” press conference at SM’s Coex Artium. Founder Lee Soo Man outlined NCT's concept of debuting teams in different countries, fostering collaborations and flexibility among members. This unique structure allowed for member rotations and new recruits without a fixed total member count.
On February 24, 2023, SM Entertainment declared the end of the "limitless expansion" concept following the future debut of NCT Tokyo, later renamed NCT WISH. The company emphasized ongoing support for existing members, confirming no further changes to the lineup.
In 2023, several departures reshaped the group. On May 10, Lucas left to focus on solo projects. Sungchan and Shotaro exited on May 24 to join SM's new boy group, RIIZE. Later, on October 2, Jungmin stepped down due to health concerns, returning to trainee status. By 2024, further adjustments occurred, with Taeil departing on August 28 amid allegations of involvement in legal issues.
