STAYC (스테이씨) (stands for "Star To A Young Culture") is a six-member girl group under High Up Entertainment, a subsidiary of Kakao Entertainment. The group was formed and mentored by producer duo Black Eyed Pilseung who are well-known hitmakers, having created notable songs for Twice, Sistar, Apink, miss A, and Chungha, among others.
The process of forming the group took the duo 3 years to find the right mix of talents and personalities, while also preparing them for debut. As trainees, the "HighUp Girls" were heavily featured in "K-Pop Evolution", a documentary produced by YouTube Originals. On September 8, 2020, High Up announced they would be unveiling their first girl group before the end of that year.
Sieun was the first to be revealed on September 8th. The following day, Sumin and Seeun were announced as the second and third members. Over the next month, the three HighUp Girls released vlogs and covers on their YouTube channel which showed them training for a variety of skills. On October 7, High Up announced that the finalized six-member group would debut some time in November. "STAYC" was revealed to be the group's name on October 12th. "Molar" and "Oriental Girls" were among the other candidates. During the period of October 13th to 16th, prologue teasers were released on YouTube for each member, and the group.
On November 12, 2020, STAYC debuted with their first single album "Star To A Young Culture".
