IZ*ONE (Korean: 아이즈원; Japanese: アイズワン; pronounced as "eyes one") was a twelve-member project girl group under Off The Record Entertainment and Swing Entertainment. The group was formed through the survival show "Produce 48", the third installment of Mnet Produce franchise, which consisted of bringing together 48 South Korean trainees from various entertainment companies and 48 Japanese idols from the populars J-pop phenomenon "AKB48" and their sisters groups, to form a twelve-member girl group who would promote for two and a half years on a special contract before disbanding sometime in 2021.
Produce 48 premiered on June 15, 2018 and was aired every Friday until August 31, 2018, when the final episode was broadcasted live, revealing the final twelve most voted contestants who would become part of "IZ*ONE". Jang Wonyoung ranked first overall, therefore becoming the center of the group. Miyawaki Sakura ranked second, followed by Jo Yuri who ranked third, Choi Yena ranked fourth, An Yujin ranked fifth, Yabuki Nako ranked sixth, Kwon Eunbi ranked seventh, Kang Hyewon ranked eighth, Honda Hitomi ranked ninth, Kim Chaewon ranked tenth, Kim Minju ranked eleventh and, finally, Lee Chaeyeon ranked twelfth. Of the top 12 winners, Sakura and Nako already debuted in HKT48 and Hitomi in AKB48, while Eunbi was previously in the girl group Ye-A under the stage name "Kazoo". Yuri previously competed in the survival show "Idol School" while Chaeyeon previously participated in the survival show "SIXTEEN".
On September 21, 2018, it was announced that Off The Record Entertainment would take care of IZ*ONE's management in South Korea from now on, replacing Pledis Entertainment.
On October 29, 2018, IZ*ONE made their debut with the mini album "COLOR*IZ". On the same day, the group's official fandom name was announced to be "WIZ*ONE", which comes from the word "wizard". Explained by the members, the meaning of the name is "our fans who love us are making a magical future together with us".
In late 2019, IZ*ONE was left on a hiatus following a rigging controversy surrounding the Produce franchise. On December 30, CJ ENM's CEO Heo Min Heoi held a press conference to make a formal apology regarding the manipulation controversy surrounding the Produce 101 series. He explained that CJ ENM will be compensating everyone harmed due to the incident. Regarding IZ*ONE and X1, he shared that they are working on plans for the groups to resume activities, and Mnet will give up all resulting profits towards a fund. IZ*ONE resumed their activities on February 2020.
After the two and a half years of their contract came to an end, IZ*ONE officially disbanded on April 28, 2021.
