Kep1er, also stylized as Kepler, is a South Korean girl group under WAKEONE and Swing Entertainment. They were formed through Mnet's survival show "Girls Planet 999", which premiered on August 6, 2021.
Their debut lineup was announced during the live finale on October 22, 2021, and consisted of Kim Chaehyun, Huening Bahiyyih, Choi Yujin, Kim Dayeon, Seo Youngeun, Kang Yeseo, Ezaki Hikaru, Sakamoto Mashiro, and Shen Xiaoting. Initially under a 2-year and 6-month contract, Kep1er later extended their contract, becoming the first survival project group from Mnet's flagship survival shows to do so.
They made their debut on January 3, 2022, with their first mini album "First Impact" and the title track "WA DA DA".
The name of the group “Kep1er” combines “Kep” which means catching dreams and the number “1” which refers to the nine members who join together to be the best. It also refers to the planet “Kepler”, the Kepler space telescope inspired by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler. The group’s official motto is: “Catch your eye, Catch your mind! Hello, we are Kep1er”.
On January 3, 2022, the group’s fandom name was announced to be "Kep1ian", which means the inhabitants of the planet “Kep1er”. On the planet “Kep1er” dwells the members together with the fans, where they share the same dream.
In May 2024, rumors began to circulate regarding the renewal of Kep1er's contract. On May 30, WAKEONE announced that the members of Kep1er had renewed their contracts, with the exception of Mashiro and Yeseo, meaning that Kep1er would continue to promote as a seven-member group moving forward. Mashiro and Yeseo will depart from the group after their Japanese concert, which will be held between July 13 and 15. After their departure, they are expected to join 143 Entertainment's girl group, MADEIN.
